Hooping It Up

Working out with a hula hoop burns about as many calories per minute as step aerobics, boot camp, or very brisk walking, a new study shows.

For the study, researchers recruited 16 women between the ages of 16 and 59 and had them learn a 30-minute aerobics routine that uses weighted hula hoops twirled around the waist, arms, and legs.

After two practice sessions to get familiar with the moves, volunteers wore portable oxygen analyzers and heart rate monitors to record their exertion.

The study participants’ average heart rate was a brisk 151 beats per minute, about 84% of their age-predicted maximum heart rates. Their average oxygen consumption was about 20 milliliters per kilogram per minute, resulting in about 7 calories burned for each minute of hooping, or about 210 calories burned in a half-hour class.

“We were very surprised, actually,” says study researcher John Porcari, PhD, an exercise physiologist at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. “You think of hula hooping as just a recreational thing that kids do. 150 is a pretty high heart rate.”

The study was sponsored by the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

“The findings from our commissioned study indicate that hooping delivers a total-body workout that can improve flexibility and balance while strengthening the back, abdominal, arm, and leg muscles,” says Cedric X. Bryant, PhD, chief scientific officer of ACE

How Hooping looks if you’re a hoop

How Hooping looks from a Hula Hoop video link

THIS amazing video shows a hula hooping session – from the point of  view of the hoop.

The offbeat film was made by fitting a small camera onto the edge of the ring  while a dancer whizzes it around her body.

As the camera is fixed in place, it appears the world is spinning around while  the hoop stays still.

The talented girl spins it up and around her body, passes it from hand to hand  and high into the air.

The film even goes into slow motion as the girl flips the hoop under her feet.

The homemade video has become an instant YouTube hit, with many saying it makes them feel like they’re on a rollercoaster.

Guiness World Record set in Tiawan

The attempt at the Taipei Gymnasium was organized by Herbalife Taiwan Inc. with the support of Dot Han Integrated Marketing Co. and Detsu Inc. and was held to celebrate the company’s special events and games for the year 2011 and to inspire people to get more exercise.

The figure exceeded the previous record set in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, on 28 October 2000 by 206 participants.

Saturday’s attempt began with 3,010 participants arranged in a grid formation of 70 columns by 43 rows in the stadium.

Each column was headed by a steward who counted the successful independent attempts for their column. Four independent witnesses, one at each corner of the rectangular formation, ensured that the grid formation remained unchanged throughout the attempt, with no additions or defections.

The record was based on the number of participants who kept their hula hoops swinging for a full two minutes between the shoulders and the hips and 2,496 participants successfully did so for the required time.

The remaining 514 participants either dropped or had the hula hoops swing below the hips and immediately sat down and were later discounted from the total

Hula hoop your way to a better body!

Bored of running? Can’t afford Pilates? There could be a way of keeping your body toned that’s affordable and fun!

Hula hooping has had somewhat of a revival recently, with many seeing the childhood game as being a great way to tone up whilst enjoying a bit of nostalgic fun.

The craze is getting so popular that even Malia and Michelle Obama have been spotted hooping, and there’s nothing like a bit of Presidential endorsement to
encourage us, is there?  Working out with a hula hoop is actually a great option if you’re looking to work your middle section – in order to keep it up, you need to have a strong core -
meaning regular hooping could have you looking more toned!

And if we weren’t already sold, Closer’s senior sub-editor announced that she’s been hula hooping for years – and trust us, she’s got a rather envious bod – so
we got in there and asked her some questions! Here’s what she had to say:

“When I’m not subbing the pages of Closer, I love to workout with my hula hoop as much as I possibly can.”
